|

Hello again,
we got a cabinet to go underneath berts tank so he would be higher up, as soon as he was back in his viv he went to his basking spot. Now he keeps on opening his mouth, i know this is not a good sign, why do you think he is doing it?
He just sits there with his mouth open, then he'll shut it for a few minutes and then open it again. I dont think hes stressed as his chin is not puffed out, just a bit worried that it might be a respiratory problem, but the tank is 2 thirds mesh.
What do you think?
Thanks Rach |

I think he might be too hot in the tank. Chams do that sometimes when basking. Try to spray the tank and get the humidity level up a little bit, to cool him down. |

if anything i think he would probably be on the cooler sde rather than too hot. his viv at the moment is 25c. it should be at 30c. |

Does his mouth gape when he is directly under the basking light?
If he has access to a cooler area of the viv then I would not worry about him opening his mouth. Most lizards do this to help them cool down.
No need to drop the basking light if the ambient temps are normal. |

correct me if I am wrong because I am new to chams...
but the basking spot should be 30c not the whole tank?
My babies go under the basking light and will gape if its set 30 - 32c but as soon as they move away its the end of the gaping!
my viv ranges from 30c under basking spot to 20 in corners near bottom, 25 in middle and around 23 on the orchid they spend most of their time..
I was worried about the gaping myself but they wonder off to cooler spots after getting their morning heat and stop it.
hope hes ok! |

My Chameleon Is Much The Same As Captainmerkin. She gapes when directly under basking spot, which is at 29-31. When she moves elsewhere, she doesnt gape. |

thank you very much for your comments!
dont worry Captin merkin, only the basking spot is at 30 not the whole viv. He has got plenty of room to wonder off around the tank and cool down.
He does stop gaping when he moves from the basking spot, so maybe he is gettin a bit hot, just so long as this is normal then thats fine, thanks very much guys you've been really helpful.

Glad to know he is okay. Yes chams do a lot when they open their mouth gaping while sitting under the basking light (daft thing to do but most of mine do that all the time). If you lightly mist him / spray the tank, it can automatically cool the tank a little bit and he will be okay again (until next time. lol). |
