|
|
Hi Folks,
I was just notified of this paper which was just published in the most recent volume of Amphibia-Reptilia Journal, which describes the occurrence of a parthenogenic event by a female Varanus panoptes.
Parthenogenesis is the development of an unfertilized egg into a new individual; basically a female producing offspring without ever mating with a male. Although rare, it has been documented in several other lizard and snake species, but this is the first documented case of it occurring within the genus Varanus.
Here is a link to the abstract; if you are interested in the full article, email me, as I should be able to send it to you in .pdf format within a couple of days.
Check it out!
