Well to get the ball rolling I recommend a tripod..I always try to use one. If you can natural light is always good but with British weather not always possible to take shots outside..A willing assistant is always handy and above all else if the animals seem stressed leave them be and try another day!

Extension tubes are ok but you will lose some light and they are in no way a substitute for a dedicated macro.. here is a good article on close up photography http://www.richard-seaman.com/Photography/Insects/index.html
