I have a male Yemen who is, to my eyes at least, incredibly handsome, healthy and very good natured, and I would like him to have the chance to breed. Reason 1 - it seems a shame to captive breeding to let good genes go to waste, and reason 2 - it would be comforting to me to think there were little Charlies out there in the world when he eventually (and touch wood in many years time) pops his clogs. However all I have read on this forum has convinced me that buying a girlfriend for him and breeding is not for the faint hearted, and I don't think I have room, time or the emotional capacity to cope with eggs and babies and all the traumas that involves! What can people suggest that might either persuade me my conclusions are wrong or suggest how he can go about meeting the lady or ladies of his dreams? Has anyone got experience they can relate of this sort of thing or is he doomed to lonely singledom? |

Hi
I've just picked up 2.3 baby Yemen's (8 weeks old) with the intention of breeding them later in the year. From what I gather they are pretty easy to breed (certainly a lot easier than the snakes I keep anyway) so I don't think you should run into any technical difficulties during the whole process.
I think the key thing is to sell them on as cheaply as possible otherwise you'll be over-run and the food bill will be enormous! I don't think they're the kind of species that will make you rich through breeding but its not all about the £'s is it! |

I don't personally think that selling them as cheap as possible is necessarily the answer to getting rid of them. i mean why would you sell something you have looked after and put all your love and attention into for £15 quid to some Joe Bloggs in the pub whose going to keep it in a shoe box. iam not saying that everybody will not give them the correct husbandry but i certainly wouldn't lower the price on them to get rid of them quickly. after all if you can show that they have got nice parents and looked after them well then selling them shouldn't be a problem anyway. good luck with whatever you decide to do. |
