Hi guys, my new little veiled was supose to be a boy but now im thinkin she is a girl as i cant see any spurs on heels. not that im bothered but im aware than being a girl i should put a tray in for egg laying. Shes about 10 weeks old now, what age should i put the tray in? And ive read play sand is best, would you agree with that ?
and what dimension tub also?

Hi Smudge, wait until she is about 4 or 5 months old and then use either a washing up type bowl or a small RUB, there are lots of articles about on the web about controlling egg laying in females through a feeding regime, might be worth having a good google as all opinions will differ

I have a veiled female that is going to be 7 years old in about 3 months and another (unrelated) one that is over 4 yrs. old (and I have had many more like this)....neither has ever laid an egg. I don't think I mated the mother of the 4 yr. old more than twice in her 7+ year life....but she produced good healthy eggs and the hatchlings did well too.

Controlling the diet and keeping the temperature slightly lower (just a couple of degrees centigrade) seems to be the reason...and even if you don't get the diet exactly low enough and she produces eggs it should be easier on her. I don't starve them by any means...I just don't overfeed them. (The rest of my husbandry may play a part in it too to some extent.)

For any female egglaying lizard I keep, I provide a container of moist washed sandbox sand for the female to dig in when she is ready to lay eggs. When empty its large enough for the female to fit into so that there are a couple of inches to spare on all sides including above her.

Some of the females will actually lay them is this size of a container....others I move to a 65 liter rubbermaid container that I have modified.

can they really lay eggs as young as 4 mnths old.
i'v got a young female we rescued didn't really want a female because of the worry of egg laying but love her to bits now even though she is one grumpy madame.
