hiya, i brought a D40 recently but im havin a bit oftrouble with settings for certain situations. im trying to take action shots so i have it in shutter priortiy mode on the faster speed settings but if i do this the pictures comes out incredibly dark, obviously there is no time for enough light to get through, short of buying a flash gun is there nothing i can do about this? just have to have it on a slower speed and put up with blurring?

thanks

jenn

Hi Jen...a fast lens will help i.e a lens with a 2.8 aperture..this will enable you to get better exposed pics whilst maintaining a high shutter speed to freeze the action..you can also raise the iso but this will make the pics grainey or noisey as it its referred to if you go to high..what action are you trying to freeze?

at the moment just my puppy running around in the garden, but im hoping to do alot of wildlife photography too so flying birds, running animals etc...
i have 3 lenses for it, one that came with it 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6GII ED AF-S DX zoom, and 2 from my old F55 , Nikon 28-80mm f/3.3-5.6G and nikon 70-300mm f/4-5.6G so none are particularly fast Sad
heres a few ive taken so far in sports mode so everything was chosen by the cam, quite new to it all really... (just been a point and shoot pic taker up to now)

i think they're all a bit over exposed too Confused

The exposure isnt too bad at all...(can you keep pics around 600x500 though please)..
I would try it in manual mode if I were you.. try iso 200-400 shutter speed around 1/250 to 1/500 it will also depend on ya lighting as well but just experiment..practice panning with the subject..do you have it set to continuous focus?
