Hi Scott, I have looked after an Alligator and spectacled caimans but not dwarf caimans. So if you are looking for tips I can help a bit with that.

If you are looking to buy some I don't know of any for sale just now but, Tom Halvorsen Ltd had them last year. I cant remember how much they were selling for, might be worth emailing him?

I think that its Paleosuchus that Kevin has at Coast to Coast?

cheers
Colin

Thanks Colin.

Interested in water temps, diet of young (% fish to rodent / insects etc) and how people have found the temperaments to be.

Also, what set up have people found to work the best?

Smile it was 4th down with me so just checking LOL (scientific name)

anyway, are you planning on getting some?

The spec caimans I looked after went from about 8" to 36 - 40" in 5 years and were fed mainly on mice. At 8 inches they got a lot of crickets and some locusts, in retrospect i would have fed them more locusts.

One thing I did learn was not to hand feed them because they then associate hands with food and would snap at them all the time. After a while of using a feeder stick they started to ignore hands again.

is there not a reasonably up to date book about croc husbandry?

I have a P.palpebrosus it's a male 70 cm long.
It's housed in a big aquarium size 220x80x80 cm(see photo)

The water temp. is about 28 degrees celsius, and their temper is relative docile, but: it's still a croc.

I'm feeding on about 70% fish 30% rodents.

I also have a Dwarf caiman. Not sure on the sex! I've had since he/she was only about 14" (350mm) now it is about 3' (900mm)ish.

I will try and get some pics on here later today

I would love to see more pics of anyone keeping them.

I feed mine on mainly rodents/raw meat the only fish he/she seems to go for is whitebait or lance fish, not that i have tried all the fish available. What fish do you use "caiman"?

when i first got mine i kept it in 6'*2'*2' fish tank (he was about 14"). I divided it into 2 thirds water and 1 third land. I kept him in the lounge!! But he out grew that and i built a 7'*3'*3' viv in the shed with a waterfall etc (may have a pic) Then we moved house so started all over again and made him a large enclosure full height 10'Long*3'-4'wide (its a funny shape) which he is in now.
