When it comes to hibernating snakes, I normally let mine sleep from 1st December till 1st March (or there abouts) and to hibernate snakes, you have to stop feeding them for 2 weeks before temperature drops to allow them to clear out their stomachs, as they will not be able to digest food items in the cold. Then after 2 weeks, you should begin dropping the temps down gradually till you reach 50-55 degrees. Then after the 3 months gradually bring back upto normal temps again.
Hope this helps

Far too many species to actually list, basically all temperate species hibernate and all tropical species don't BUT you should look up the species you are keeping and adjust as required.
Hibernation normally begins by withholding food for 2 weeks, then reducing temperatures down to 12c for a set period of time (depending on purpose and species). You then raise the temps back up and after a full two weeks of the correct warmer temps you can begin feeding again. It's normally best to feed smaller meals after hibernation, just to allow the stomach to start working again, then back to normal after 2 or 3 feeds.
You DO NOT need to hibernate if you have no plans on breeding but I'd still recommend a winter rest, even if only 6 weeks. _________________

it would help to know the exact species as temps may very slightly.
I have 1.1 thamnophis marcianus that are brumating at the mo.
I started out by withholding food for 2-3 weeks, as people have said, so they can empty their guts. i then started to reduce their day time hours for a week till there was no light and left for 2 weeks.
I then put them in a well ventelated container with a hide and a fresh bowl of water and put them into my garage, where the temp will remain at a steady 53f.
I am planning on leaving them there untill mid January.
During this period i will check on my snakes once a week to make sure they are not loosing too much weight and are otherwise healthy. Also clean their water bowl and add fresh water.
When i plan on waking them i will remove them from the garage and keep them at room temp for a few days and then start increasing the day light hours again. i will wait then a few days and try them with their first meal again.
If any of the experienced keepers see a glitch in this then please let me know as this is my first time brumating my snakes.
Thanks
