How long can a Tortoise survive on it's back ?

i have one stupid little git (one of my sulcata hatching's) that seems to enjoy turning it's self over Rolling Eyes

i have caught it several time's but my father went to look at them last night before their light went off and low and behold the little git had done it yet again!

i have removed an exo-terra cave that was it the viv and given them an up turned plastic tray as a hide as well as a wooden box,
i know they love climbing even just into the corner's of the viv (which is where the said git still manages to do it's little party trick.

In the wild...until they die of dehydration/sun exposure or from predation. In captivity then until someone goes and turns the silly sod over! Laughing

I have had babies straight from the egg right up to adults do this all the time - some more then others even seem to make a habit of it Laughing

Cheers Cool

I've found that if you give them a helping hand and turn them back over they are more likely to lay on their backs and wait for a passing friendly helping hand. So I leave mine to do it themselves Wink

But with sulcata's they are more of a dome shape rather than a cone shape and don't lean over to one side, they stay balanced in the middle and just throw a silly fit trying to get somewhere.

HI Smile

how old is your tort, because young ones can die on there backs if they are under the light in half hour, so you want to keep things as flat as possible!

Also what do you mean by viv, its very harmful to torts to keep them behind glass, they should be kept in a tort table far safer and will prevent a lot of vet bills!!

They are June this year and
They are in one of these. and they are that small that they cannot see over the bottom glass runner, so like being in a tortoise table.

Hi,

only its not a tort table, is all the glass still in it?

If so your tort can get very stressed behind glass, because they don't understand it and will try to get through it, also you can't control the humidity in there this will cause all sorts of health problem, runny nose and shell rot just to name, there are many other health issues!! for a happy healthy tort you should get a tort table!!
