a few weeks ago i brought a started culture of Dubia Roaches about 75 after hearing all the good points from Rick so i thought id just share some pics and say how much easier they are to keep and breed then crickets ok they are much slower breeding but damn they are so worth it they dont smell just leave some cat biscuits and a few slices of apples in there every other day and keep them warm and they do the rest.

I prefer to use these over any other feeder.

Try Covering up the sides, and scatter a few more egg crates around the floor.

yeah well i cant feed them off yet as ive just started to breed them.

when you say cover the sides up do you mean to make it darker for them so like there in a cave or somthing.

i thought they liked being close togther hence why most of them are in groups so i thought i didnt need any more egg cartons yet untill there are more of them?

They huddle tightly together it is their nature to do this and hate to be separated from their colony, same for most roaches. When setting up a new roach colony, by taking excess roaches from one tub, I only put a few egg flats in and place the food near by, as their numbers increase I increase the housing material, I usually house a good few thousand in each tub, they thrive better when kept in high numbers. For my lobster roaches I keep approx 20,000 per large tub.

Have you got pictures of your set-up rickeeze?
I just started with aprox. 150 grams of adult and small dubia (no idea how much that is...guess around 70 adults and 40 youngsters...)

Exactly the same as Martins picture except lots more roaches and lots more egg flats. Same shape container but I use 84litre tubs.

Here are a couple of pictures taken about two years ago when I started my lobster colonies off, egg flats removed.

I was thinking of setting up a roach colony.
But I really dont know what roaches are best.
Hopefully I will be making a rack so will be able to use big RUB's.

I have heard that dubia's take ages to get going?

What would you suggest?
And how many to start off with.

the reason i chose Dubia over lobsters was because they couldn't climb the plastic boxes and are slower moving.

But they lay eggs, and I dont think I would be able
to hatch the eggs and raise the young.
Where-as lobsters do all of that themselves.!

no Dubia are the same as Lobsters they are live bearing.
