Can anybody shed some light on way some scales end up like this,
is it just because of the way the animal sits straight after a shed and the scales just seem to set in this position?

My big boa in particular gets creased scales, I think because he's a lazy lump and lies in the same position for ages. Your Sri Lankan is a beauty!
