The latest additions to our menagery (sp) are a couple of birds. A rehoming of an ex falconry centre display female barn owl and a six y.o. male harris hawk in need of some training for hunting. pics will follow as I think I may have lost my camera .

a small species of owl, that live in burrows, from north america. They inhabit prairie dog burrows. one of the smallest owl species. they prefer to run and walk than fly. very groovy little animals _________________ Tom

Hi YG, the harris is at 1lb 8oz at the mo. prob have to lose a couple of oz to get him started as he has not been hunted before. he is 6 y.o. he is responsive at 1.8 but will not be sharp enough for the rabbits. should have him entered and back up to 1.8 before christmas if we get a decent frost. still too much undergrowth on our ground.

Best of luck with him.
You gonna be workin with lures to start him off?
If your gonna be workin him with dogs or ferrets best advice (which I learned the hard way) get him acclimatised to them before takin em out together. _________________ MORE THAN 2! |

He will be working with a rabbit lure and a 'pheasant' swing lure. the last male wasnt keen on pheasant so this one is getting the works in training. the weatherings allways face the ferrets hutch, that way they know white fur doesnt mean dinner!!!!!!!!! we only use white ferrets just so the birds can tell the difference when all he11 breaks loose
We are only training this bird for the breeder. My sons bird didnt make it through an operation at the start of the moult so he was going to be without a hawk this year. it was a kind offer by the breeder who was going to leave this bird in the aviery for another year. he will be going back to him for breeding at the moult and my son will get the pick of the young (hopefully female as we have hare on some of our ground)
