Hi all,
Well, i've just got back from my 6 week trip to South East Asia - I had an absolutely fantastic time and can't wait to go again! It wasn't specifically a herping trip, but I still managed to come across quite a few different species whilst I was mooching around.
I also encountered some awesome invertebrates and mammals (including 7 species of primate) which i'll post in the other photography section.
All of the following critters are wild ones - with my best guess at the species! First up are the herps from Borneo, then i'll move on to those encountered in Thailand!
Enjoy!
Borneo:
I think Mabuya rudis, rough scaled brown skink.
I'm not very good with my monitor identification, I *think* the following 3 are Varanus rudicollis? Though do correct me if i'm wrong! These were seen on Sapi island, part of a nature reserve just off the coast of Kota Kinabalu, Sabah.
A pair of frogs at the side of a waterfall in Danum Valley- possibly genus Meristogenys?
A couple of Rock Skipper Frogs, Staurois latopalmatus at the same location - these had fantastic camouflage!
A very pretty skink - no idea on classification!
One of my favourites - the Green Tree Lizard, Bronchocoela cristatella
This 2 metre long fella was just chilling out on a badminton court...Python reticulatus
A large water monitor, Varanus salvator
Striped Bornean Tree Skink, Apterygodon vittatum
An unknown frog just singing by a puddle:
I believe this one is the File Eared Tree Frog, Polypedates otilophus
A pair of mating house geckos (Hemidactylus frenatus?):
And I think this one might be Gonocephalus grandis, the creek anglehead agamid.
Thai creatures coming up next.... _________________ Sophie

Thailand:
The green paddy frog, Rana erythraea - these were pretty much everywhere, very common. Very pretty though!
Some sort of small brown skink - not sure on classification. Spotted in the North of Thailand, in Chiang Mai.
I don't know what snake this is, but also seen in Chiang Mai.
A bit further south now - Khao Lak, which is on the West coast. A big warty toad! I havn't got so far as to look these guys up yet...
Metamorphosing!
A treefrog species
And finally, I love these chunky little fellas! Kaloula pulchra
I hope you enjoyed looking at these - I can tell you, I had a lot of fun photographing them! _________________ Sophie

The first skink that you don't know the name of is an Mabuya multifasciata.
Nice picture's! , I'm a big fan of Asian skinks If i'm going to that region I want to visit Komodo, New Guinea, Solomon Islands and of course Australia, just herping _________________ Proud owner of

Wow pictures look fantastic! Spent 3 months out there herping this Summer (I will get round to posting the pictures Stu! ). Looks like you had a fantastic time. The first skink has been reclassified as Eutropis rudis from Mabuya now, the small brown one looks like Sphenomorphus sp. (probably S. variegatus looking at it) Can't believe you got that close to Bronchocoela!!! And how cool is that Kaloula! I'll try and id some of the other stuff for you later when I get a spare minute (just moved into a new house!) ....oh and the toad's Bufo celebensis (the snake's killing me though!!) _________________ Regards James Stroud |
