has anyone used this hemp bedding for snakes, are there any additives/reasons why it couldnt be used, below is the stuff from surreypetsupplies, its like aspen but a lot cheaper, i asked surrey if it had anything added to it like citronella a citrous odour additive and they said not that the knew of, but i need to be more sure before i A) buy B) let snakes near it, so if anyone has any exprience with this or the hemcore bedding please let me know. http://www.surreypetsupplies.co.uk/acatalog/Horse_Bedding.html
AUBIOSE BEDDING 20kg
The Natural Alternative
Aubiose is derived from the soft core of the hemp plant - a fast growing annual, cultivated principally for the manufacture of paper. The hemp is grown organically in the Champagne Region of France, in an ideal climate, and monitored by experts. Once the hemp is harvested, its by-product is graded and thoroughly dust extracted.
The superior quality of Aubiose remains consistent and there is always a ready supply.
Clearly the best.
Apart from significantly cutting down the workload and stable management Aubiose can greatly contribute to the general well being of the horse and rider - Especially if the animal suffers from respiratory problems.
Tests carried out at Bristol University proved that the horses suffering from C.O.P.D (Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease) may be safely bedded on Aubiose.
Quick and easy to use
Dampen the Initial bed with water - typically one watering can full per bale - This will help the bed to settle. Horses are not usually tempted to eat Aubiose but as they can be inquisitive we recommend the bed be sprinkled with a weak solution of safe disinfectant when first laid. Ensure the horse has access to its normal ration of forage.
Deep litter System; disturb the bed as little as possible. This will help Aubiose contain ammonia smells and discourage insects. Add fresh Aubiose as required - typically 2 bales after 10 - 15 days. Alternatively remove droppings daily and wet bedding as necessary. (Every 5 - 7 days). Rake the dry bedding to one side; remove any wet material from underneath and top up with fresh Aubiose.
Natural Disposal
Aubiose is produced from young plants and breaks down easily into humus generating a small volume of manure. It takes up much less space in the yard and has value as a natural fertiliser.
Aubiose Because . . ..
Aubiose is derived from the soft centre of the hemp plant.
Aubiose is cultivated without pesticides, fungicides, herbicides or insecticides.
Aubiose absorbs up to 12 times more urine then straw and 4 times more than shavings.
Aubiose - spongy by nature helps prevent the horse treading through to the floor.
Aubiose - competitively price and economical to use.
Aubiose - Skip out daily, clean out wet every 5 – 7 days.
Aubiose - top up bed with approx one bale per week.
Aubiose is simple to store, carry and spread.
Aubiose keeps the horse warm and rarely presents a wet surface.
Aubiose has a spongy texture, which traps odours.
Aubiose is unattractive to flies and parasites. Aubiose is durable longer lasting, hence less work.
Aubiose comes in heavy-duty plastic bags. Easy to stock and store.
Aubiose quickly decomposes in to a highly organic fertiliser.
Aubiose is ideal for gardeners, nurseries, fields and mushroom growing.
HEMCORE BEDDING 20kg
Hemcore Horse Bedding is made from the inner core of the hemp plant stem which is grown and processed entirely in the UK. It is not bleached and no chemicals are added at any stage of its growth, so producing a 'green' product which is full recyclable into useful compost. Hemp is also fast-growing and fully sustainable.
MEGAZORB BEDDING 20KG
MEGAZORB has one of the highest absorbency of any horse bedding currently on the market thus reducing the time and cost of mucking out. MEGAZORB is available year round, and is biodegradable and cost effective. As MEGAZORB is produced from a by-product of the wood-pulping industry, that would normally go to waste, it is also helping the environment and being totally biodegradable is easy and cheap to dispose of. <<<<<< thoughts on this stuff?

I've used it for rodents before and got on with it well - looks nice, soft and kept the mouse smell down as well as any substrate can!
I just can't store whole bales which is why I've not used it since. |

I use hempcore bedding for my cornsnakes and a few other species I keep and like Peaches snakies they love it ... there's always a network of tunnels through it. It's no use with species that require a high humidity though as it does mould very quickly. I used aspen before but this is a quater of the price for the same quantity ... think I pay around £7 a bale from our local farm supply store.

Hi Ed.
I used Auboise for a couple of years, and kept Royal pythons. i found no problems with it, even though they would swallow small pieces when feeding occasionally. i found it very absorbent & easy to spot waste and keep clean. |

Just wanted to add to this thread, when buying Aubiose or Hemcore or anyother similar product ... please make sure that it does NOT have citronella added ... this is a natural insect repellent and in some countries used as a snake repellent and can be an irritant and potentially toxic to snakes.

I had a look at this bedding on Tuesday, grabbed a handful out of the bale and ended up with several splinters sticking out of my hand....that was enough to decide not to use any in my collection. _________________
