|
|
This saturday i got my first lizards i was originally going to get a beardie but they had sold the beardie and had rankinsXbeardys left
I was told the father is pure rankins and the mother is half rankin and half beardie
Well i got two of them here they are
and here is one giving a wave
I have read lots of caresheets and i have two books on keeping bearded dragons but everything i have read for rankins says they are kept almost identical to beardies
I have got a couple of questions though that i have not found clear answers to
How much should i be feeding them the pet shop said they were being fed once a day and not getting livefood on sunday (veg at all times) but did not say how many crickets per feed. Also other sources for beardies say they feed babies a couple of times a day and i assume no day without insects
Should they be sprayed and how often and should they be given baths if so how often and how long for each time
I have heard that rankins should be kept slightly cooler than beardies is that right and what temps do you suggest
Here is a few pics of my setup in case you notice anything that should be different. I am also looking at getting a habba tree to go in front of the uv so they can climb up to sit closer
At the moment the temperature at the back behind the hide is 70f - 71.5f and the hot end behind the wood is 88f - 90.6fwhen i put the thermometer on the wood under the light it is reading 107f - 109f
The stick on thermometers were already in i have got a two probe thermometer in use

You got a couple of nice ones there. In answer to your questions:
You want to try and feed small crickets/hoppers 2 or 3 times a day and keep some mini mealworms in a bowl in there at all times, in the same bowl as you put your veg is ideal and do this everyday.
You can give them a light spray daily whilst young to make sure they are well hydrated and it normally entices them to jump in there water bowl. They will normally bath/swim in there bowl themselfs but when you clean out there viv you can place them in a tub of shallow luke warm water.
I tend to find mine dont like to bask under a spot lamp if it goes over 100 so try and stick to middle/high 90's.
The viv looks ok, but if you can lower that uv it will be better or at least fit a reflector to direct more downwards. Also keep an eye on wether they use that water bowl as it may be a little high for them at there size, i know they can climb into it but its just sometimes if they cant see the water they wont go there to drink(why its good to spray them daily when young)
Good luck with them. _________________ www.Reptilebreeder.co.uk

Thanks for the replies guys
Jas i have a 75w bulb in for the bassking at the moment and when un thermostated it goes to 117f under the basking so the 109f is dimmed slightly
I have a 50w bulb exactly the same make etc which may be better for a mid 90's temperature so i will try that out.
When you say feed crick/hopper 2-3 times a day roughly how many do you put in each time as one place i read said they can have 50 a day at a guess as beardies can have 100
Others say as many as they can eat in 10 minutes |

i would go for as many as they eat in 10-15mins, if you put too many in you will just end up trying to catch the uneaten ones, if they are left in they may stress the beardie and possibly bite him |
