Hi

I have just checked on my royal and there are tiny little light brown/orange coloured critters in his tank, i suspect mites.

I have no clue how these could have got in there, is it possible they came from food? how do i get rid of them plz? Ive read about frontline ect but the advice seems to be different regarding how to apply and strength.

Could someone pleae advise on how to get rid of them. I have noticed a couple of dull scales on his head too. What is the best way to clean his tank too. Irwin is 800gram at last weigh.

Thank you in advance
Amie

Hi
never used frontline but am fortunate to own a tin of provent a mite
if you can get it provent a mite is brilliant stuff(follow instructions exactly)

glen chandler of jungle phase often has it in stock.

http://freespace.virgin.net/jungle.phase/

Tel: 01708 500800 his website has not been updated for years but i think the phone number is still correct.

Basically you spray newspaper or substrate with provent a mite(away from animals) leave overnight so completely dry and fumes have gone.

Put newspaper/substrate in enclosure with snake and surrounding areas and like majic no more mites or spiders or anything insecty for that matter. top stuff

We were unfortunate enough to 'import' mites when they went to the Slither Inn (our name for their holiday home Mr. Green) whilst we were on holiday.

Only our Royal was affected and we just could'nt shift them from the poor rep herself. Ended up going to a rep vet who injected her and with a thorough cleaning of the vivs she was right as rain. That was two years ago and we have not seen a buglet since ... Very Happy

Good luck with your clean up if it is mites... Shocked ... making me itch and scratch just thinking about the horrible little creepies ... Evil or Very Mad

I've successfully used frontline in the past, although, it's not everyone's cup of tea. An over application can potentially harm your animal, particularly with species with thinner skin. Royals should be OK.

You'll need to seek advice from and obtain a bottle from your vet. When I apply, I spray it onto my hands and then allow the snake to crawl through your hands. This normally ensures you're not overly generous with the application. Err on the side of caution to start with. I also spray a small amount into the corners/seams of the viv.

You'll also need to remove the water from the viv for a few days.

I've always found one application is enough, but another may be necessary. If you've got further questions, please feel free to contact me.

Regards
Rob

i have tried a few mite treatments in the past including frontline but something ive found works very well..............hypoaspis mites.........they will feed on the mites in your viv and die off when they eat all the little critters..........hope you solve your mite problem Smile
