Cheers guys! Ye they had a great selection but some of the enclosures needed much improvement. In particular the Lacie looked very thin and dehydrated and all of the enclosures needed to have some decent deep substrate and more humidity. They all (appart from the Komodo) looked a little underweight too.

Well from those pics I would say the lacie looks to be a normal weight, you can tell by looking at the tail base, also when monitors look dehydrated their eyes appear to be sunk in giving the appearance of an heavy brow. Yes the komodo looks on the fat side.
I know the hierarchy ( Izolde ) at Chester and she is very knowledgeable as regards to monitors. The enclosures are designed like this so that they meet the paying public obligation. People go to the zoo to see animals that's the simple reality, if they had more cover then people would not see the animals on display. Last time I was there, the varius enclosure was virtually the same as the one at Rotterdam just on a smaller scale, which is where the Chester varius derived from the Rotterdam breeding program. |
