We have been in Costa Rica for just under a week, and have seen loads of herps, so far.......
Common iguana
Dendrobates pumillio
Basiliscus basiliscus
Basiliscus plumifrons
Hemidactylus frenata
Red eyed tree frogs
Cane toads
Misc Anoles
Caiman
But as usual NO SNAKES, the weather is VERY rainy, and too be honest no self respecting snake would be out and about in it, but as we move down to the pacific side of CR, the weather should brighten up a bit.
Its a great country, and i would reccomend it to anyone.
oday we saw at least 50 Large Iguanas, all perched on treetops next to a bridge, they were huge, and mainly a very bright orange !!
Will post a bit more when i have a few more sightings to add to the list.

hi Ian,
thanks for posting, I had always planned to go to Costa Rica with a friend many years ago but it just never happened
Also makes me laugh that you can get internet access in the 'jungle' but I struggle to stay connect back here!....lol
Are you with a guide party and if so how many are in your 'group'? I always wondered how many out of a typical tour are herpers and how many are only interested in the fluffy stuff.
I should imagine you have some great photos, look forward to seeing them. _________________

We are in Monteverde cloud forest at the moment, its a bit chilly and pretty damp !!!!
The group we are in is a bit older than us to say the least, but they are all a great laugh, and mainly birdwatchers, but all seem to enjoy the herps too.
The oldest couple are 75, and very funny.
Saw 10 Ctenosuara today, huge buggers and very plentiful.
The red eyes are amazing, and pretty chunky.
The dendrobatids are a lot more common than i expected, and stunning.
Also saw Howler/spider and white faced monkeys, which were amazing.
Tomorrow we are off on a night walk and probably a bit of Ziplining, very scary canopy wire sliding thing !!!! but not nearly as scary as horse riding.
Have taken hundreds of pics, and will post them on my return.
Scott do yourself a favour and take a trip out here.

thanks for the update Ian, it is sounding fantastic. Yep, it's on my list of places to visit (along with Oz & Mad).
is there much of a difference between day & night temperatures? (when you say 'chilly' what is the temp do you think?) _________________

So far we have been in Cloud forest, rain forest and at varying elevations,
this morning in the cloud forest its pretty cold, i am wearing a fleece, and its been pissing down most of the night.
In a few days we hit the pacific coast which will be hot and sweaty, which is one environment we have not yet experienced
im now off for a treetop walk, and a nature trek, probably in the rain !!! |
