I found this poor little fella in a heated aquarium, and as you can see, he's missing a foreleg and severely underweight. Fortunately for him, it's freshly missing, and very clean considering.
I went over to one of the assistants, and he was shocked. Gave me the newt there and then, saying he'd tell the boss that he's not going to let him bring in anything else unusual, if the boss won't research it first.
Have to say, I'm pleased with him, he's quickly sorted the rest into a better, cold tank, and I'm dealing with Kane (the chinese fire-bellied newt) at home.
I've given him a salt bath (half-holtfrieters to clean wound) and will give him a half dose of aquatic antibacterial in a sand substrated quarantine tank with some mangrove wood for climbing on.
If he recovers, and it heals well, he can go in with my other CFBNs. Wish me luck with him!
(Update: I've managed to trick him into thinking two defrosted bloodworms are alive, and he's eaten them!!!) _________________

Well done, Amber. I'm sure he'll heal eventually and do well with the rest of your crew! _________________

To be fair, the bloke instore did his best, and got them comfy as soon as I set him straight. And did the sensible thing by letting me take him to treat, instead of using a normal fish-curative that may well have done more harm.
I will however let you know how he gets on - he's been climbing on and off his bit of mangrove easily enough, so I'm happy that he's mobile and coping. Just wish there was a supplier of live bloodworm here in Bath - would make life easier for now... _________________

He does look quite thin. Would he take earthworms or waxworms, or even frozen bloodworm? _________________

Trouble being he's too small for earthworms, and again, lack of suppliers locally for waxworm (but will ask someone I know nicely if he can bring me some).
I've been trying him with frozen bws, but he's not interested. I only got him to eat yesterday by sitting for 20 minutes wriggling the individual worms out the bottom of a pipette. He's not buying it today.
I'm tempted to see if he'll try microworms, but I think they'll be far too small to catch his attention. Worth a shot though, I'll pop him in a plastic tank and try it now...
Whoo, I know Dartfrog's got a good reputation (I've bought dry goods from there on occasion), but that price is a wee bit steep! Up home, I can buy a bag that size for less than £1, and you don't get postage lamped on top of that... Mum's coming down south on Thurs, so I hope he'll manage until then - she said she'll bring me some. _________________

Well if my waxworm breeding colony was established I would send you a few but unfortunately it's just getting started. Good luck once again with the little guy. |

Thank you Phil, that's very kind of you to say
I tried him with some microworms, and some live daphnia out of my colony, and he's ignored both as I expected he would.
Ha well, will try again tomorrow, another 20 minutes of pretending to be a bloodworm... _________________
