...if you breed a hybrid back to a normal animal. I know there has been quite alot written about hybrids and peoples opinions and i d like to say that i don't really agree with hybridising recklessly which is what appears to occur at the moment.
I know scott has said more than once that its not the first cross that bothers him its what happens afterwards thats the problem. So what does happen afterwards? What happens for example if you breed a bat eater back to a retic or burm? I'm almost certain from common sense alone that you wouldnt end up with a het for bateater! But you wouldnt end up burms or retics either. I guess you'd have a mungrel. Would you be able to tell? Does anyone know what happens with dogs for example, how can you tell a pedigree canine from a pedigree chum?
cheers

hi Martin,
You've hit the nail on the head with "would you be able to tell?" That's the biggest problem, if someone buys a hybrid, mates it back with a parent species and then gets normal looking babies out, noone will want them as 'hybrids' as they offer nothing new, also none of the 'purists' would want them either. So what's to happen to the offspring....more than likely they will be sold into the pet trade as hybrids or normals...either way a % will end up being classed as normals by first time or less experianced keepers.
Hogg Island boas are probably a good example, back at a reptile show in the early 90's (IHS walsall), someone was offering Hogg Island x Columbian Boa babies, these looked quite 'hoggish', there were a good number for sale but the strange thing is I have NEVER seen hoggs x columbians offered as adults or babies ever again....What happened to all the young? Did they never breed? did they breed back with hoggs? or Columbians? My guess is that most that looked like hoggs lived the rest of their lives as Hoggs & those that looked like normal boas carried on as normal boas. That was 10 years ago, think of how many affected bloodlines could be out there now? _________________

I think it's our responsibility as owners and breeders to know just what species/sub species the animals are including their original locality if possible and this should be past on to the new keepers if their sold.
I obtained two Leachies from a guy and I asked if they were Henkeli,no he said their Leachianus Leachianus. Not knowing a great deal about them I went away thinking they were Grande terras, anyway since then I've spoken to a guy whose friend bred them and they've turned out to be Henkeli, but even he did not know what locality they are.I think from studying their eyes, markings and head shape that they are most likely to be Nuu Ami,but that's only a guess and what if the parents are from different localitys,it's so frustrating |

It is that, and once the watered down less obvious hybrid offspring leak into the "system" or captive Gene pool, there is nothing we can do about it. I am a firm believer in locales being kept pure let alone species. Deliberate hybrid production is totally wrong in my eyes. It`s nearly always done for monetry gain and I hate it. _________________ YSBRYDOLI POBL, GWELLA LLEOEDD
