I am interested in hearing from keepers / breeders on what factors determine the price you request and the price you pay for animals.

For example do you consider the genetics / parentage / number of feeds / breeders reputation etc etc etc. Or is your decisions purely financial?

Another example, i have seen my local pet shop sell a Royal Python for £80.00. I personally would rather pay £50.00 train fair and travel down to England and buy a Royal Python for £80.00 if it meant buying from a reputable source. In effect though that animal has cost me £130.00. Is it really 'worth' an extra £50.00?????????

Your views please................

I usually stick to breeders that I know or have been reccommended by trusted breeders.

But on the other hand, if a shop has something which I want at the time and I feel the price is reasonable then I would also buy it.

Alot of the time you have to trust people and build up good relationships to help you out in this hobby.

As everyone does we would search out the going rate for any reptiles my son was looking for and compare against the prices at our local pet/exotic shop. There may be a premium to pay buying from a shop but our local place is rintouls in bathgate and as Derek has years of experience breeding snakes from corns to burms and everything inbetween you can buy with confidence even if it may not be at 'breeder prices'. He has also given my son loads of advice since he started collecting reps, aged 9, so a bit of loyalty doesnt go amiss either.
Joining the Scottish Exotic Animal Society was also a good move as almost every body breds reps and you know who has what for sale and where the breeder animals originated from. As for number of feeds, a breeder shouldnt be offering a snake for sale unless it has had required number of feeds and feeding regularly.

In my opinion, it doesn't really matter where you get the snake from if you're buying morphs or normals that you can see. The quality of the snake depends on how well it's looked after most of it's life, not it's infancy. (A snake starved as a baby can still be a healthy adult).

It only really matters if your buying hets where you can't see the other trait e.g. albino. But even then, if you're getting receipts that state the genetic background of the animal, you can always go back and complain when you breed them and find out otherwise.
