I made a few fake rocks using polystyrene covered in tile grout then coated them in PVA glue and sand. I didn't like using grout as it's messy to use and I had trouble spreading it on hard to reach places. I experimented with polystyrene covered in PVA glue and sand only and found it as strong and looks the same as using grout.
When making this background I used wooden skewers to make the ledges stronger and covered the back and bottom in Bounty kitchen roll and PVA/water mix to make the background stronger so that it can be lifted out without breaking it. I've added darker sand and reindeer moss in places. I've glued on some air plants and attached two plastic plants (I will add some more air and plastic plants later).

just over a week. The house was full of polystyrene bits and sand, I left it outside to dry but when I carried it in loose sand fell off, my wife wasn't very happy.. _________________

Excellent job Reeve
Impressive mate ,have you thought about spraying it with say a 'fleckstone' type of paint. If you choose a similar shade you can get around coating the whole surface,it will also add nice bit of extra texture.
Just an idea.
Thanks for sharing,Keep up the Good work.

Damn shame you're not a friend of mine I would love something like that for my snakes, but I am useless at that sort of thing. _________________ 23/07/07 RIP Mousey a furry companion of 15 years. |
