thinking about it, if you are one of the people who cant understand why anyone would want to keep venomous and wouldnt even concider it then, I can see why you wouldnt be able to compare it. |

Sorry. Mate. When did I say that exactly? |
thats why I said "if you are one of those people" not "you are one of those people" , the reason I said that is because some people cannot understand why anyone would want to keep a reptile that could potentially kill you in one bite, and to someone like that driving and keeping venomous reptiles just wouldnt compare becaue they would see the risks of keeping venomous as insane, when really it is safer than someone with no experience would think, if all done properly and not corners are cut, if you see what I mean? |

Don't wish to 'jinx' myself but I've not been bitten in over 13 years of keeping DWA and nearly 20 with dealing with them in other collections.
Yes there are risks, MOST can be reduced to a perfectly acceptable level.
I must admit I'm lost on the crossing the road comparison, as EVERYTHING is in your control, car coming too fast....don't step out, simple.
With a snake you may think it's under control but one little slip of loss of concentration and you could be in trouble _________________

I have been envenomated three times.
Complacency, neglect maybe.... anyhows, I will still keep them
I cannot explain why, but for me its not the venom, its the snake. The snakes I keep just happen to be venomous _________________ ngiyakuthanda Sonvanger |

Now this is a sentiment I can agree with entirely, I don't care if it's venomous or not, I love venomous because they carry an added challenge to captive husbandry, but I know species that are 100 times harder to keep well, but are not venomous and would choose them every time over a mouse disposal unit that offers no challenge. I am still after 25 years of keeping snakes happiest with my Indigos. They are very bright, placid as hell but if you mess up while feeding you are going to regret it. They are also very inquisitive, great fun to train and introduce to new experiences, and beautiful to hold.
To answer the thread question, I have been tagged twice by adders, both times out of complacency and carelessness, mistakes that could have been avoided. Both times I learned from my mistakes, and it made me a better herper. I spent the first 20 years of my life chasing wild snakes, only keeping a limited number at home, and a wild snake on the run offers so many more issues that one in a viv. Getting bitten by a captive hot is avoidable, and getting tagged by a wild one is just as avoidable, simply leave them alone.
People have been risking their lives for their passions since man evolved, just ask a pilot or a motor sport enthusiast, sometimes they die doing what they love, venomous snakes are just another passion that people are willing to accept the risks for.
If you want to live your life avoiding the risks, you may die old, but will you have truly lived?
Al
