Hi

In a couple of weeks I am buidling a rack type setup for adult leopard geckos. The rack will hold 9 large contico tubs, 3 x 3, lidless + vented from eurorep. I want the enclosures to be fairly simple, I'll just run you through my ideas of how I want them :]. (similar design to Scott's DIY contico rack)

The tubs will either hold 2 adult females or 1 male or breeding pair.

I want to use sand as the substrate (as opposed to newspaper), for a few reasons, but have never really seen it used in racks, my only concern is that it will be very heavy. I think daily spot cleaning would be easier, no crickets hiding under newspaper, looks better etc. What do you think? The rest is pretty 'usual', I was thinking of using guttering cut to size for hides down the hot end, humid hide/nest box cool end, water, mealworm and calcium dishes.

Once built, equipped and working correctly, I need to get hold of some more adult leopard geckos. I will be concentrating mainly on my favourite looking morphs and some normals that I already have. Would Hamm be the best place to get a nice selection of leopard geckos? I have never been before but could probably make the September show. I take it there are usually a lot on sale...

If anyone could answer some of my questions, or add their views I would appreciate it Smile

Thanks

If you are worried about it being so heavy you could use eco-earth (coconut fiber).

I suppose so, thinking about it though people house royals like this and they would weigh more than a thin layer of sand I reckon.

I wonder why people don't use sand in racks, or do they?

I use either a thin layer of sand (1cm) or the same depth of mixed sand and dried eco-earth.
It just depends on what I have most of at the time.

I will create a similar setup with just sand I think, and hides at the hot end. How many leopard geckos do you keep?
