I was slightly shocked when I saw my freind`s corn viv without the uv tube on, and as I keep Dragons, I was concerned how this may effect her bones, motivation and appetite.
Iv Googled the question, and Iv got mixed answers! Some people say light is not needed, others say it, (along with the temp) is the first thing to sort out!!
My mate`s corn doesnt seem to be very active, would it have anything to do with not having light for a while?
Also, if yes, how often should you change the bulb, as I know the uv\uvb fails to work after some months?
Thanks, just curiuos realy!

So far this is no evidence that corns benefit from UV light in the same way lizards do, it can't harm them to have one, but it seems not to be a necessity to life. As long as they are in the correct temp, given the correct food and get some sort of day/night cycle they develop well.

My snakes are not active during the day prefering to stay hidden they come out at dusk and are more active then as is their naturem, and boy do they become active. The eat well and grow as they should, I have never used a UV light.

Brilliant! Thanks Snowy!
Is it just corns that dont need UV, or is it most snakes?
Very Happy

a lot of snakes never come out in the day and start to hunt or become active at dusk ,, so i personally dont use a uv light but i use a small strip light so they have a photo period

My garter snake got himself stuck next to a UV light I used to have in his tank and it turned him blind in both eyes. I would never use a UV light in a snakes tank again. Sad

that's a shame about the snake, does it suffer at all from being blind? or does it go about it's business pretty much like other snakes?

It never really seemed to affact Redd much, we took him to the vet soon after we noticed a problem obviously but the vet said he'd be fine. He lived for a good few years after that and we never really noticed a difference.
