hey new to this site and to owning royals just bought 2 female normal royals but i was advised not to use a heat mat as if they have a poo on it then that can burn/blister there belly scales i was advised to use a 40w spot light as the heat source. the guy that i bought them from (reptile shop mainly snakes) seemed to know his stuff but would like some more opinions on this as i am new to balls
any help would be great as i dont want to do the wrong thing
cheers neal.. _________________ 2 female royals 6 corns

Heat mats are fine as long as they are on a stat, and you are keeping your snake in a contico/really useful type box. If it is being kept in a wooden viv, however, you would need an overhead source of heat, like a ceramic, or reptile radiator on a stat.
Scale rot and blister problems tend to occur when the snake is kept for a prolonged period of time on a damp, unhygienic substrate(i.e. if it's damp and the snake is lying on wet substrate in its own excrement). Obviously if you are checking every day and spot cleaning when necessary, then it won't be a problem. _________________
