|
|
I would love to once again own some Royals, but am too afraid to try again. A few years ago I had two adult females and a young male in a large vivarium together. All seemed to be fine with no unusual behavior from any of them. All were feeding, shedding and pooing properly. I would occasionally give the girls chicks as a treat, but not the male as he was not yet large enough.
One time though the girls took their chicks and went into their warm hide to digest as usual, but never came out alive. A couple of days later I found them both dead. The male was alright and I simply assumed that there had been something wrong with the chicks, and have never bought chicks again. The male was put into a smaller viv on his own and was fine for many months, until one day I found him dead also.
It was very upsetting. If they had shown signs of being unwell I could understand it, but NO, all seemed to be fine until they just died. |

People often refer to chicks as a poor food item, from what i can see that is not entirely true http://www.rodentpro.com/qpage_articles_03.asp. I have herd of a few cases where reptiles have died due to being fed chicks, I think this could be related to the conditions that there kept or transported in(overcrowded cages with the sick and the dying) prior to being gassed.
I doubt anybody could tell you what your Royals died from, but i would try again by purchasing a CB Royal and feeding mice and rats. |

Two females and a male in one setup would be asking for trouble as they would have to compete for the hot spot, the cool spot and the water bowl.
They were probably very stressed and being fed chicks (??) wouldnt have helped.
I suggest reading as many caresheets as you can, then try again

Thankyou guys, as I mentioned the chicks were only a treat item, they were usually fed on rats / mice. Eggman you are so right, except that it was a very expensive 'horse' to fall from, and upsetting too. For now will stick to Rosys, hoggies, etc., but if I do decide to have another go, I know where to come for some super Royals |

John, will the babies be from either / both of the pastels that I saw, or from normals ? Have the prospective parents been mating, or is it just a twinkle in your eye that is causing you to see baby royals. |

I'm sorry you had such a bad experience with your first royals. I hope it doesn't put you off owning them again in the future. _________________

Stress etc usually shows e.g. not feeding so my guess would be something else at play.
What was their setup, mats, ceramics, viv, tub etc?
Also did you ever spray anything in that room, frontline them, paint the room?

They were in a 4' wooden viv., with low watt light bulb, heat mat over about 1/3 of floor area, large water bowl, hides over mat and at cool end. The only thing that MIGHT have been done is Frontline spray. I have used it on snakes, but only a SMALL amount. Cannot remember if I used it on them.
I used it on a large Boa constrictor that I suspected of having mites, but it had no iffy effect on him. Not sure if I used it on the Royals as well - this was several years ago - but if I did and that is what caused their deaths, I would have expected the small male to have succumbed first. |
