Have you had the DWA licence approved on that set-up?

Where abouts are you?

Yea, the lock thing has to happen ....

Im installing later this week 2 metal arms coming from the wall which will then lock into the wire grills on top of the tank.

The licence is only £25 per year in Stevenage, Herts...

Thats because the DWA Officer is the most knowledgable DWA officer you will ever meet !!!!

Will keep you all updated, but any comments and suggestions are more than welcome ...

Thanks

Steve

it makes a lot more sense to me for you to be more knowledgeable than he in caiman. as he only inspects housing and you will be the one interacting with it on a daily basis...and you will for one thing or another.

they can certainly be a handful.

what do you want to know?

i always recommend to keep their enclosure as simple as possible.

i know that its in your house and you have to look at it all the time so you want it to look nice but when it comes down to it, they dont really care. in fact, they actually prefer dirty murky water.

all plants or anything small you keep on the land WILL end up in the water so you will have to move it back and forth possibly several times a day. so you may want to avoid that.

as much as you may not want to disturb your animal, trust me, he wants it way less.

for the most part they are hands off animals. occasionally (and i do mean that) they will tolerate brief handling, but they would much rather bite you so that they leave you alone. in the beginning year or so of their life you should just get them used to you putting your hands in there one a day or so and NOT adding food. never let them see your hands when it comes to adding food or they will draw a comparison, and you dont want that.

ideally youd like to be able to clean their enclosure and do small maintenance without them going after you. so getting them used to it is a good idea. if they get stressed, stop. taking them out should be kept to a minimum in the first few months because as hatchlings they are scared of EVERYTHING and stress out easily. when they get a little bigger they are far better about human interaction. but as i said, they still dont like it.

i guarantee you that you will get bit. youll get comfortable with them and what you are doing and you will let your guard down for a split second and when you do youll realize why paying attention is so important. you should just make sure that its sooner than later because babies cant do a whole lot of damage, as much as they would like to.

this is a good start.

any other questions, feel free to ask.

it may save you some stitches.
