Two friends, plus a random person I heard of, have been sold boscs recently under the 9inch mark, which I would've thought was a bit too young to sell at. Is this normal or are people selling boscs at younger and younger ages. I have my doubts that any would be captive bred seen as most breeders would wait for quite a few successful feeds?

One person who I dont talk to personally but talks to my friend, claims he bought his bosc when it was just two days old. Another friend bought his at 4inch and the other friend hers at 6/7inches.

My bosc was around 9-10 inches when I got him, what I see as a healthy size. These others seem a little small for my liking and i'd certainly be put off.

Anyone got some input to this?

Did your friends buy their boscs at pet shops or from private breeders?

Doesn't really work that way with imports(99.9% are), soon as there captured or hatched its only a matter of time before they are boxed and shipped straight to the pet trade, so there is no telling how old they are.

You pick the best of the bunch Confused and hope for the best.

they just seem very small to me... I got a baby a few months back but it was nowhere near that small but i thought it was tiny yet it might as well have been double their size!

the 4" mark is a totally fine size to sell them at.

granted, the older the better.

but there is nothing wrong with small ones.

Nothing wrong with one a few weeks old but at the same time it's good for the prospective buyer to actually see a full sized adult just so they know what they are getting.

I doubt if there are any UK/Europe captive bred boscs about, probably only ever been successfully bred on a handfull of occasions.

there is actually a place within 45 minutes of me that breeds them on site and sells the babies in the store.

Captive breeding of bosc monitors is extremely rare. Like Scott said, this has happened on only very few occasions (Probably because most people let them get way too fat. There was an article a few months back of a German guy that managed to breed his, he fed insects almost exclusively)

@ Cristopher; Are you sure they are CB (Have you seen the adults and eggs?)

Friend down the road has a UK captive bred Bosc's Monitor, it came from us Very Happy . Ours were insect fed and had free roam of the viv room floor. Came home to find them mating in the middle of the carpet. She laid 12 eggs eventually, managed to eat around 8 before we caught her, and of the four remaining only one hatched and that lives 4 doors down the road. I think having plenty of space and a good diet helps. Ours also had UV at their basking point.
