Sadly I found my lovely Kingsnake girl, Sammy dead in her viv tonight.

We never knew Sammy's true age and last year she got egg bound despite us not having bred her. We had to get medical help to save her life. I read on the internet that often when this happens the snake dies after about a year. Whether it was this or whether Sammy was an old snake, I don't know but one thing's for sure, she was a much loved snake and of all my snakes she had real character. She was the only snake who would actually come onto my hand when I opened the viv door.

Ironically, a few weeks ago we found a mate for her and we were doing the quarantine thing with him. Only this afternoon I said to my husband that I would introduce him to Sammy after they'd been fed. That won't happen now Sad

Wait for me at Rainbow Bridge, Sammy Snake

I miss you Crying or Very sad

What a shame! She was a lovely looking snake, and I'm sure she enjoyed her life with you. Crying or Very sad

The price we pay for loving them so much is the pain we feel when they go. Very sorry to hear about your loss. Sad Sue

It is a high price we pay. We only have our pets for a short time. Every second we have them is precious and it's not until we lose them that we realise just how precious and part of our lives they are.

Over the years I have mostly had cats, and I've lost many cats either due to illness, accident or just plain old age. My oldest cat is somewhere between 16 and 20 - a rescue I've had for 10 years. She was terribly ill-treated by her previous owners which left her permanently crippled. Over the last 2 years she's had two serious illnesses. She only survived the last one because I nursed her through it and wouldn't give up. I came very close to having her put to sleep but something stopped me. I'm glad I did as she's made a good, but not full recovery. We know she's on borrowed time and has been for the past two years. We're very lucky we still have her.

As for Sammy, she displayed no signs of being ill or anything but whatever killed her was very sudden. As far as I know most snakes go on their backs when they die. Sammy was the right way up. I wonder if she suffered a massive heart attack.
