|

Hi all...
It's been nippy over the last few days, and I've been monitoring temperatures in my cham's viv. I have no basking spot yet for him, as I thought we were into the summer (apparently not). The temperatures went down the other night to about 15 degrees C. I've stuck a heatpad next to the viv for the moment, which is fine as a temporary measure.
What I'm worried about is the temperatures during the Winter. I'm sure it must get colder than that...and if it does Albert will need some night time heating. What options are there for heat lamps that don't emit light? I know you can get red lamps, but won't that make the viv light up red during the day? I'm worried the viv won't look attractive, and it won't bring out Albert's colours nicely....
Basically I need a basking spot setup that works 24 hours...what about these ceramic jobbies...Sorry for my lack of knowledge on this...I'm used to heatmat setups...most things I've had don't need basking spots...
Cheers all

i have never used night time heating with any of my chams,i found it really is not needed unless it gets very cold and if this happens i heat the room not the vivs,
How cold does it get in your house? 15 is not too bad they should benefit from the drop at night
Ceramic's are not that good IMO as they give off a very dry heat and will cause problems with humidity at night,A heat mat taped to the outside side of the viv not the bottom will be fine.
When we get to winter he should be bigger and more hardy but as said i would heat the room not the viv

What, so you reckon heat pad at night and basking spot during day...should work I suppose...As for heating the room...we do, but quite often in Winter if it's not unbearable we don't put it on for the night time...it makes more sense to have it on during the day when you're using the whole house and not under a big warm duvet |

We have an oil filled radiator in our rep room that we can put on at night, just to take the chill out of the air. It's fairly economical to run, and keeps the ambient room temp reasonably warm. _________________

None of my chams have any night time heating. But I do monitor the room temps every day all year round at night. I would consider an oil filled rad with a thermostat, De Longhi make some good ones available from Argos. I use one of these in my herp room durring the winter. Even then the herp room is so well insulated it is only on power setting one and is only actual giving out heat for about 3 hours per night if that, in winter that is.
I would be more worried about extremes of heat Joe. _________________ www.rickslivefood.co.uk

Cool...(no pun intended)...
I don't think we'll have too much problems with heat as long as the windows are open...will be monitoring it carefully...
thanks everyone for the advise...will let y'all know how I get along |
