Since snakes can digest bone, I doubt if one bit of woodchip will do him any harm and will probably just pass through as normal.
I would, however, recommend switching to Aspen substrate. My Milksnake is on Aspen as he too loves to burrow.
At feeding time I take him out of his viv and put him in a feeding box with no substrate in it and once he's finished eating, put him back in his own viv. Gives me a chance to clean out his viv too. _________________ 3 Royal Pythons - Byron, Bobby & Rosie

Is it the square beech chip ?
If it is then tell your friend to get him off that stuff now, its a killer.
It's not good to eat any substrate as they can all cause blockages but beech chip is much much worse than virtually any other.

Depends, if it's the square pieces of woodchip, then they really don't tend to break down in the stomach and they are quiet often too big to pass through without getting caught somewhere in the snake.
I've seen woodchip kill quite a few snakes, it's something I'd never really keep a snake on, everything has a risk but in my view woodchip is just too much.
If it's pieces of orchid bark or aspen then I wouldn't worry because they usually will pass straight through and not cause problems.
