I have a short question..

What are Elaphe obsoleta quadrivittata named now? Panterophis? And what Pantheropis would it be?

As far as i can make out, but don't hold me to this, pantherophis is the new world name for elaphe.
so if you merely substitute elaphe for pantherophis you have your answer Smile that's if I've got it right of course. (I'm sure someone will be along very soon to correct me otherwise Smile)

yeah it does work for some and not others lol. yellow rats are Pantherophis obsoletus quadrivigatta or even Pantherophis alleganiensis Burbrink 2001.

But there are some of the new world rats that were previously Elaphe but have not changed to Pantherophis, for example Elaphe triaspis which is now Senticolis triaspis.

Great!!

Thanks for your help. I did know that there has been changes in the Elaphe-taxa, but not really how. Is it all American ratsnakes that has been renamed to Pantherophis? And some of the European still keeping Elaphe status? It makes me wonder, because Elaphe situla is now Zamenis situla and Elaphe longissima is Zamenis longissimus. Where did "Zamenis" come from? Elaphe quatiorlineata is still E. quatuorlineata though..

No not all american ratsnake are Pantherophis, we also have Bogertophis , Pseudelaphe and Senticolis.

Zamenis was a taxon previously used for a number of European ratsnakes, think this was Wagler 1830. When Utiger et all (2002) reclassified the Elaphe group, alot of the older groups we resurrected as it were.

I still try to work out myself why one goes to one group and one to the other lol but so much of the work now is done using DNA aswell, if I understood all that maybe I'll get there Rolling Eyes
