So I understand that when you bring home a new king, you ought to let it settle in for a few days (3-4, I'm told) before you try to feed it so that it's comfortable in its' new home and doesn't regurgitate it's food from anxiety or fear. I also understand that you ought to feed juvenile kings about twice a week so that they grow into big strong healthy kings later in life.

Having said all that, here's my story:

We got a new juvenile king on Sunday afternoon. She been in a tiny little container for a couple of days and had just gone through a car ride where she was jostled about and moved around and generally discomfited. When my wife got home with her we installed her immediately into her new home. She burrowed for the heat mat and that was about that. Monday went fine and I glimpsed her trying out the "Houdini" act that kings are famous for when I got home at about 11 that night. I watched her for a while, enthralled as I'm new to snakes and this one's got an unexpected surfeit of both personality and smarts. Her habitat is secure is there was no fear of her escaping and I went to bed safe in the knowledge that all was well and that I was head-over-heels for our new pet.

Then Tuesday the roofers showed up. I live in a loft with a steel roof and so roofing is loud, accompanied by heavy vibrations from the equipment, extremely foul smelling and has a tendency to shake detritus loose from the rafters and drip bitumen through small holes in the ceiling. Of course we moved our newest addition to a secure spot that was as stable and free of vibration as we could manage in the situation and beneath cover so that nothing potentially harmful would fall through the screen on the top of her habitat.

She seemed fine last night when she was out poking around and trying out the security of her perimeter again, but I'm wondering with all the movement and action of the last few days if I shouldn't wait a bit longer than I would otherwise before I try to feed her.

Does anyone have any advice?

Right. The flip-side of my worry was of course that she might be pretty hungry. It's been... hm, I'm not sure but I'd say it's been six or seven days since she ate. We haven't fed her yet and we got her Sunday. I imagine she wasn't fed while she was in transit and since the store got her Friday... Hmmm. Could have easily been a week by now. I'll try handling her a smidge when I get home tonight and drop in the new water bowl (the one she came with is too small), then I'll give her a fuzzy.

Really my chief concern is not stressing her out too much. We want to keep her healthy and happy.

Thanks for the suggestion.

Feed her! all my cali's have been pigs, i could count on one hand the refused meals, saying that all the refused meals where when they where hatchlings, just defrost and leave in the viv if its still there 24hrs later remove it and try again in a couple of days.

i always fed my cali's once a week and they all grew to be big strong snakes.
