Is it safe to put a heat mat under cage carpet? Or would that be a fire hazard?

Initially, I used calci sand for my Beardie's viv (I changed very quickly when I realised the dangers!) and was worried that she might lie right on the heat mat, if I put it on the floor, under the sand - so I put it on the back wall instead.
I've now been thinking that if the heat mat could go under the carpet, it would probably heat the floor area better, and I'd know my little one wasn't going to get burned.

What do you all think?

Thanks in advance.
Kel

If your planning on putting the heat mat directly under the carpet, I would get thermostat to control the temps. I really doubt it gets hot enough to be a fire hazard but if your worried about it burning the herp, the thermostat will prevent that.

If i was you Kel i would take out the heatmat and put in a spot lamp for heat Very Happy , yr beardie will appreciate it so much Very Happy , or if u have a spot just take the heatmat out and leave the bare floor cos that carpet catches their nails i found that out lol, just untill your baby is old enough to be on sand, this is just my opinion i have never used heat mats with beardies as they need to recognise heat from above as opposed to below i.e from the suns rays, i am sure sombody with more expertise will be along soon and help you out Very Happy

Thanks for your replies. I have my heat mat on a thermostat, and the spot light, for basking, is on a dimmer stat. The heat mat is on all the time, but is really just to make sure that it doesn't get too cold at night.
Do you think that the spot lamp is enough, and I don't actually need the mat? The heat mat doesn't seem to make that much difference to the tank temps anyway.

Thanks so much Karen. I've been using the heat mat since I got Kizzy at the end of December, simply because the guy that sold me her, said I would need the mat too! I'll just take it out now.

Thanks again for your help.

Your welcome she is lucky to have such a good mum, just keep yr stat far enough away from the heat so temps are about 105 / 110 even and she will be fine Very Happy

Thanks dol. I've just been re-arranging the tank since reading your reply - taking the mat out etc.

It was like spaghetti junction in the cabinet under the viv!!! A bit less cables to deal with now!
