|
|
For the past few nights the tenrecs have been making high pitched squeaking noises. I spied on them tonight as they were squeaking again.
I saw one of them on top of another. The one below was the one squeaking.
Not being familiar seeing tenrecs mate, I assume they were but am not sure if this was juvenile horseplay. At one point the one on top was way off course if they were mating, at another point it looked like a possibility. Very hard to say.
Anyone able to help please?
I dont want to get over excited and mistakenly think they were mating, much prefer to think not, then I cant get disappointed if that makes sense.
Tense times huh. _________________ www.rickslivefood.co.uk

Madagascan lesser hedgehog, although they are not actually hedgehogs but due to convergent evolution have evolved to develop similar characteristics e.g. shape, quills etc. There are pics on the exotics thread somewhere. _________________ www.rickslivefood.co.uk

Right I saw a penis the other night.
So I know for sure that at least one of the Tenrecs is male. Whether or not the mating was a success is hard to say but from my observations the male did not appear to manage insertion but who knows. Also the release of a milky substance from their eyes when mating; I have heard that this happens but have not seen this yet so this confuses me as to whether or not the mating may be successful.
Right I have found out why the female squeaks when they are mating, the male pins her to the floor and bites just behind the back of her head to hold her there, not very romantic really. So I assume that is why she squeaks so much.
There has been very loud squeaking every night for prolonged periods on and off. So fingers crossed.
I am concerned about one of the group, a smaller tenrec, not sure if male or female, seems to be isolating him/herself from the rest of the group ( I have six of them). Now I am wondering if this one is male and is being dominated by the larger male that I have observed mating. Or is another female that is trying to get away from the other male. So much to learn about these lovely critters. Trouble is trying to find information relating to group behaviour there just does not seem to be any.
Any other keepers able to enlighten me please? _________________ www.rickslivefood.co.uk
