Just been to a local garden centre (as I seem to quite a bit now getting into reps etc more!!!). Was looking at the big propergators, including the heated ones. Does anyone use them, as they work out quite cheap for the size. Was thinking frogs, crabs etc.

Cheers

Chris

I know Pete parrot uses them wth succes but only as temp housing not a perm home.

I would stay away from heated ones for amphibians and they will most likely be too warm and end up cooking them Shocked

I am having sucess with them as far as dart frogs go. They were only meant to be temporary accomodation, and the frogs are breeding in them. I would definately avoid the heated ones, and go with your own heat mat and thermostat system, or as I do, just heat the room that they are in.

I have recently moved house and will be installing the frogs in their permanant homes shortly. I won`t be throwing the propagators out however. They will be very useful for quarantining new frogs and raising groups of young animals.

One thing to watch if you do use them DONT leave the sliding hatches open! Frogs will escape through them. Wink

I use a couple of the bigger Heated ones, they used to be great as mentioned already as incubators for snakes I've kept in the past. I've been using them as temporary housing for dart frogs since Peter got me back into them Wink Laughing .
If you are worried about the possibility of frying any occupants just do what I do and put another habistat in line on the electricity supply to the propagator, set a couple of degrees hotter than the one on the propagator itself that way if anything goes wrong the extra thermostat will take care of it. I've never needed it (touch wood) and the actual temperature control on mine has been really good.
