My whitesided texas ratsnake has just given me my first ever clutch of eggs so im pretty excited but im stuck as how to remove them. She finished laying about 2 hours ago (its half nine at time of writing) and I was thinking about coaxing her out her box with a mouse. Is this a good idea or should i wait until she decides to leave them as she does look pretty wrecked. My concern is that if it is left too long then i may be unable to seperate them. Any help on this would be much appreciated.

I take it then she is still in the nest box with the eggs, is she being protective?

You'll just have to get her out, get the eggs and then put her back, I'm sure a mouse would be very welcome.

Congrats on the eggs btw Very Happy

Since we are on this topic, can I ask the general concensus on separating eggs that are bound together in a clump? Separate or not, that is the question! Smile

Personally I like to separate them if I find them immediately after laying, it prevents one mouldy egg affecting others.

I tend not to separate them if they are even slightly stuck, and have found that a bad mouldy egg does not affect a good egg, even if stuck tightly to it. Any mouldy eggs usually occur within the first two weeks after laying, indicating that although they may have looked ok initially, they are not good, fertile eggs. The mouldy egg shrivels eventually, and the good eggs do not become mouldy.

I agree, if their stuck I let them be, would hate to rip one when trying to unstick.

I routinely separate eggs.

Several years ago,I had a clutch of Gonyosoma that I didn't separate. One egg died and an otherwise healthy hatchling died trying to hatch into the dead egg.

I haven't experienced anything negative separating, makes arranging eggs for incubation much easier!

Cheers

Mark

Do you have any tips then for when seperating, I take it you seperate after laying? I'm just so nervous as I wouldn't want to tear them.
