Johne: Its hard to tell unless you trust the breeder or have seen the adults.
Yellow ackies (brachyurus) can have some nice red in. But there is no mistaking a true red (acanthurus). Look at the second pic from rare earth there is no yellow ackie (brachyurus) with that amount of red. |

Those are direct from Don Patterson, Canada. they certainly aren't the best or brightest I have seen. I also bought over 15 from Brandon @ Canadian Coldblood (far brighter and 'cleaner' looking animals).
I have many photos (somewhere) of reds and the differences between those and yellows (and intergrades).
I will try and find some photos of the better of the reds I imported, they are as good as any I have seen, including Rare Earth's
Incidently there's more to it than just colour and pattern occelations, including adult size, clutch sizes, and spines/spikes lengths. _________________

This is turning into an interesting post for me.
Scott would you say the yellows or reds get larger? And out the two which would have the larger clutch?
Its not uncommon for some of my girls to have 14 or even 16 eggs per clutch throughout the breeding season.
Here are some pics of the different yellows.
Starting with a female who laid a huge clutch of 16 eggs in 2005. |
