Almost forgot...UV
I don't use them anymore for carnivores, omnivores and insectivores. I believe a varied diet and a good D3/calcium supplement is the key to a healthy lizard. Although i have read allot about UV lights causing eye damage, unable to penetrate the skin in some varanids, i still think they are beneficial provided that the animal can retreat to a hide when it chooses.

I have a garden centre near by that does organic pesticide free type top soil and a pet wholesalers that does avery sand. Am still playing about with mixs.

I personally use uv, just in case.
Rick, B&Q screened & sterilised top soil, £3.48 35litre bag 50/50 top soil/ playsand mix 12" deep. i spray it every couple of nights.

I use the exact same mic as Johne.ev but i also add a bit of BnQ building sand (it just gives it a more redish color and holds moisture better.

So that's 50% soil 25% play sand and 25% red builders sand.

Mine holds humidity really well, i hardly ever mist down. The top stays dray and dusty and about 1" under the surface its nice and moist and holds a burrow really well.
