The guy was a complete prat* to watch, perhaps one of his most endearing features for most people? Certainly for me, that ability to make learning an enjoyable experience is something many try so hard to achieve yet he managed so easily.
The below quote sums it up very nicely IMO
Thomas Shanta wrote: | Absolutely gutted, the mans almost singlehandedly responsible for promoting and educating many people young and old about the more unloved creatures and showing that they all have right and a place on this planet. It's a real loss we need people like him,to dispel all the misconception of many of hated animals that are persecuted needlessly. |
A great loss for both his family and his fans. He will be sorely missed
To "go" doing what you love is a dream that i'm sure many share, there could be nobody more deserving, in my opinion, to spend his last few hours enjoying life in such a way that would educate others yet further.

Something i thought you should all know:
Bryan Fry wrote: | Unless you've been in a closet all afternoon (not the proverbial one, a real one) you'd be aware of his death. He was stung through the heart, with death resulting not from the venom but from the horrific tearing of the flesh characteristic of stingray envenomations. However, as stingray venom is extremely painful, if he was not unconscious or in shock his last moment would have been ones of absolute agony.
This isn't the first fatality from a barb penetrating the heart, a similar case happened in Melbourne for example to a swimmer in 1945.
The animal shouldn't be demonised, stingrays are gentle, magnificent creatures that only sting out of fear, not aggression. He was obviously too close and the animal felt threatened.
Our heart goes out to his friends and family. |

Everything has been said already. What a terrible and significant loss to the World.
I too hope that his family are given the privacy and respect that they will now need and not hounded by the press. _________________ YSBRYDOLI POBL, GWELLA LLEOEDD

I just hope his work continues in memory of him, he certainly deserves a LOT of respect from us all.
Rest in piece Steve.

Tremendous ambassador for all of the worlds animals, as well as excelling in what he did best. Truly was one of the great venomous handlers around, nearlly thirty years of experience and not one hot bite, taking into consideration the amount of stupid things he did on camera I have nothing but respect for him.
A huge, huge loss.... _________________ Regards James Stroud |

"At 11am today, the 4th September 2006, Steve Irwin was fatally wounded by a stingray barb to his heart whilst filming a sequence on Batt Reef off Port Douglas for his daughter’s new TV series.
Emergency services were called from Cairns Rescue Base and met Croc One, Steve’s rescue vessel at Low Isle on the Great Barrier Reef.
The Croc One crew performed constant CPR during the thirty minute dash to Low Isle, but the medical staff pronounced Steve dead at approx. 12 noon."
I was diving off the Low Isle a week ago. _________________
