It varies from state to state, from the sublime to the ridiculous, even what animals you can keep varies from state to state. Rolling Eyes
Here in Victoria, it's so easy it's a joke: send off your money, tell them what licence you want, and 3 weeks later you've got it. We have a situation at present where an 18 yr old on a basic license can go & get a lacie. Accident witing to happen. Same kid could apply straight off the bat for an advanced & keep a taipan or saltwater croc with absolutely no experience whatsoever. But then we aren't allowed to keep Boyds forest dragons. Go figure! Rumour has it though that they're changing to a system where you have to have held an advanced for 2 yrs, then be sponsored by 2 recognised keepers & do a handling course before you're allowed to keep hots. We can only hope!

Hey raptor,

I agree with what you are saying about it being too easy for kids to get advanced reptiles. I'm in NSW, where you do need an advanced licence to own a lace monitor, which is at it should be as you know what their feeding response and teeth are like. I've refused to send some of my hatchlings to people in Victoria because I discovered their age.

We also require letters of reference and an advanced licence being held for some time before you can get a category 1 venomous, then time spent keeping category 1 before you can get category 2.. and so on up to category 3. I think it's a great system.
