Hi Bri,
Hope you are well?
Do that, it would be good to touch base with you again and see how life is now treating you.
Thanks for signing both P's.

Re the "exotic animal" petition
This is maybe predictable following my previous comments, but would it be better to have a petition in opposition to something more concrete ?
A problem I have with the petition also is the wording. What is a politician, or anybody else to make of a "captive care keeper in the UK". Wouldn't "keepers of exotic animals" have been better ? I don't think the second paragraph makes sense at all. I got my wife (an ex English teacher !) to look at it and she couldn't understand it either, though I think I might know what you mean.
Before anybody comments on what I have said please go to the downing street petition link and read slowly what the petition says.
I am going to get slated for this I know. But I am on the same side as you !! |

Hi Mark,
I had two editors read this before it was actually placed up.
"With increased legislation under the new animal welfare act such as codes of practice, enforcement, education, regulation, communication and awareness there should be no genuine reasons for the government to encourage the opposition to continue their campaigns to cease this".
The three paragraphs are to be read as one. But l have found that l must break all main bulks of text up when presenting this kind of thing to the reader.
Well l can not change the wording of the petition now.
It reads fine to me, but then it would do for l know what is meant and of course l wrote it.
However, it simply means, that our government whom is comprising now predominately of left wing radicals against the keeping of exotics should have no genuine reason for the promotion of the prohibition or restriction of exotic species by the keeper under the legislation that they themselves have passed. Their opposition is in fact noted and their inclusions of the anti establishments are well known now to date.
The only way of writing that in a way for people to understand was to write that as such as is now presented.
More concrete?
Like what?
The RSPCA - investigation into them maybe? That was done and that failed?
Complain about the EPS?
This had to be a petition that went a little deeper than Chris Newmans went - which was just 'to support pet keeping', closing on 904 signatures after the twelve months.
You know it is easy to raise a petition, if you feel that something of a more worth while nature is required then raise it, and l for one will support you and do my best to promote it as well.
And lastly 'captive care keeper in the UK' this is actually the politically correct term, but in reality it is no different to your term - 'keepers of exotic animals', it is just the term that the codes of conduct will be holding.
Your term however would specifically aim at exotics only, and the term l have used takes into account exotics and the domestics, for the antis now class all animals in captive care as exotics - and whilst this petition is relatively young it can still be used in many more places than one just aimed at the exotics market.
Also, with what you were saying about wild caughts, there is such a petition, l noticed last week a petition to prohibit the importation of wild caught animals and reptiles, l will try and find that link for you.
It was raised by a lady last August ,and expires in August of this year.
It had six signatures,

Here it is:
Raised By Gemma Keen
Now stands at 10 Signatures:

I am a devoted animal lover and keep some exotic pets but they have all been captive bred. There are websites, shops that are going to countries like Indondesia and taking live animals from the wild then selling them here, it must stop before we wipe out anymore species.
There is also one aimed at bringing in licencing on all animals:
http://petitions.pm.gov.uk/AnimalLicense/
Samantha Tatters
Dog licensing is a fantastic idea; but why should other animals miss out?
Bring in a system for licensing all mammals, birds and reptiles; licences should be renewed yearly.
Licences should differ in price for the various animals e.g. a licence for a large dog would cost more than that for a smaller breed, which in turn would cost more that that for a small mammal. Price should also depend on how difficult it is to keep an animal e.g. a licence for a hamster would be cheaper than that for an iguana.
If a licence isn't renewed the animal(s) will be removed from the owner & re-homed through a shelter which home-checks all applicants to ensure they are responsible and suitable.
2 Signatures: Ends Feb 2009
There are all sorts of petitions from silly to non sense to serious.

There is another thing, l notice in the petition by Gemma, the word and the use of the word pets.
Primates are not pets, perhaps reptile keepers call their reptiles pets, l am not sure, l have pets, dogs and cats, nerys has pets, Skunks and everything else.
But l did not want to include the word 'pets' , nor hobby, nor companion animals - these are three words and phrases, l deliberately kept away from.
I do not regard the keeping of exotic animals as pet keeping.
I do not regard the keeping of exotic animals as a hobby.
And l do not regard exotic animals as companion animals, albeit many of the readership may well do.
But l did not mention those terms , so that each reader would interpret the petitions introduction to how they saw their animals and what they meant to them. By doing so it does not exclude signers who do view their animals as pets, nor does it exclude those who see it as a hobby nor even those who view their hobby pets as companions. And yes, from my first post of this threesome, l can be classed as a hypocrit for l have said that the antis refer to all animals as exotics.
My dogs and cats are not exotics, they are domestics. But if it means Mark that we get more than 904 signatures [C/N] to have our voice heard by the government and that means a far reaching figure of 100K, then does it really matter? As long as the damn thing is signed by all those that care for their animals?
And no, l don't think you should be slated, you have spoken your mind and voiced for all to see. I can only commend you on it.
