If you witness a good ovulation (i.e. a large swelling) then the prognosis would be for viable eggs. However, some follicles don't develop fully and it is these that don't get fertilized and result in slugs.
(Incidentally, I don't mean to come across as a know-it-all so sorry if it appears that way. )

Dave, a nice person who also does know-it-all, or most of it anyway, is JUST the sort of person that is wanted on this Forum. I am sure that everyone will agree with me. Only by asking someone who is knowledgeable will the rest of us learn. Thankyou for your helpful answers.
