You dont need a shutter release..just stick the camera on a tripod, snake in a hide..set camera to continuous focus and lift the hide with one hand and press shutter with the other...A shutter release is useless for unpredictable photo subjects...

I'm sorted for both, have a 4 gig CF card, adn I was thinking continuous shooting should do the trick, along with the tripod, which is more to stop my hand shaking and ruining the picture, bad enough with the buggers trying to escape, also the shutter release so I don;t wobble the tripod grabbing for the button Laughing

those must be some royals you have... every time ive handled a royal its taken it about five minutes to wake up and move!

(Louise and Colins "Elvis")
Id have thought they were a perfect subject, unlike darty baby cornsnakes, ick:

Sam, I must have the untrained version of Royals then, as soon as I get mine out, any of them, and put them on a flat surface they make a young corn snake look lethargic Laughing If I'm lucky I get maybe 30 seconds to get a shot, and it take me that long to reach for the shutter button on the camera. Even when the damn thing is hanging around my neck it doesn't give me much time Laughing

Scott must be breeding a new variety of Royals, they are obviously a high speed version, or he's been lacing their rats with caffeine Laughing

Did you have to dig your way out this morning Pete? Laughing

Trust me it ain't too warm here at the moment, I've had to put an oil filled electric radiator in the nursery to keep the snakies warm, I couldn't keep their ambients up to 80, they were barely touching 75 last night, and as they are still digesting their dinner I wasn't taking the chance! I keep popping in for a warm Very Happy

thankfully it was not too bad by the time i returned to ' the hill ' Laughing

as for a cable release , yup I can see the benefit Exclamation longer one , or IR means you DONT need anyone to remove the hide to expose subject.....you can do that ....complete independent control.... no release means you have to be near tripod...surely continuous focus ( and half decent DOF ) takes care of the unpredictability of the subject .
