I never realized that they grew in leaf litter, thanks for that. I do put a layer of leaves down about once a year, usually beech. Do the roots actually grow in the litter?

yup the basically glide through the leaf litter over rocks roots etc.. cultivated ones are grown in pure coco fiber /canna coco and the roots are in baskets purely to hold them up. next one you get just un pot it then with a sterile blade cut the roots and stems into say inch long pieces and scatter them around your see a bunch of small new plants with in a few weeks and they will do the natural thing which is always cool.. I like Oak and magnolia leafs for the leaf litter _________________ Paul

I've always used beech because I read somewhere that they contain their own anti bacterial agents. I avoided oak because I was told that they are a bit acidic because they have a high tannin content. If you've used them and had no problems I'll give them a try.
I was intending to go to a few garden centre over the weekend, if I spot a couple I'll get them and give it a whirl.

Oak and magnolia last for ages in a viv with 90% humidity at times so in something less they'll last even longer _________________ Paul
