What would you suggest for people that want to breed their own mice and not have to kill them with their own hands... well... err... fingers.
The only way I can see is flash-freezing. |

Flash freezing???? What do youmean? By subjecting them to dry ice?
I think that if you want to breed and you dont want to do it manually then co2 for larger mice would be the best way. Now this depends on how many snakes you have and at what size rodents you need.
If you cannot manually do pinks, then buy them, let your pinks grow to feed your larger snakes. There's not a be all and end all. You can buy some and breed some.
I don't use co2 at all, I prefer the manual way.
I think aswell until someone can get over the squemish part about killing them, maybe rodent breeding isn't for that person. (Harsh I know) _________________ www.ratsnakefoundation.org |

Before I bought my snakes I had to ask myself two questions and answer them honestly:
1)Would I be able to feed a live animal to them? This was incase they would refuse all attempts at feeding with freeze/thawed, rare but it does happen.
2)If I moved to an area that did not have a source of frozen food would I be able to kill mice if I had to breed them myself?
If I could answer no to either of them then I would have decided snake keeping is not for me. I could answer yes to both as my primary responsability is to the welfare of my snakes not my personal feelings on things.
These are two questions I believe everyone shjould ask themselves before buying snakes, after the obvious ones concerning the snakes physical welfare.
I only have six snakes so cost is not a justifiable reason to set up a feeder colony to me, so the only reason I would have is the inability to get to a ready source of frozen.
I am thinking of breeding my snows in four years as I have just gotten a female youngster who is not related to my males. I may need a ready supply of pinkies so a feeder colony maybe needed and cost may be a justification. Before I go down that road I will have a third question to ask myself:
Will I be able to give the time to look after them in a humane way?
If I can only answer no to that then breeding is off my agenda. |

I used to breed mice a few years ago. It was only about 4 litters a month.
I found if you gently held the tail of the mouse so that they were on a flat surface, a swift wack with an adjustable spanner on the back of the neck killed them instantly.
more humane than a mouse trap or poisening.

Some people would think using a hard object to kill a mouse would be wrong, I was just trying to put it into perspective.
Obviously you would not poison a mouse. It would then poison the snake.

True Mike. I was talking to a friend and she said she couldn't feed live or kill mice as food for a snake if it was needed, the irony of this is she was searching in her cupbaord for mouse traps. A real life example of what you are saying. |

I think it's the fact that people distance themselves from the killing with mouse traps.
My younger brother killed his first few mice last night, took him about 20 mins to pluck up the courage for the first one (after that he couldn't care less) yet he'd quite happily feed a live mouse to a snake. _________________ A lil bit of Madagascar
