Sorry to sound at best naive and at worst plain stupid, but if I were to query from a vendor, the origin of his stock ie if I had doubts the animal was CB or I suspected it wasnt come by strictly legally.,if said vendor was reluctant or unable to provide the necessary paperwork, could I report it to some body?
Sorry as I said if this sounds kind of dumb but as I tend to visit all the rep sites I have often pondered a few things I have seen but kept my doubts to myself.

If the animal is covered by CITES then yes you could report it to DEFRA, if not your only other option I guess is trading standards. _________________

I'm pleased to see this in there
The vendor should provide sufficient care information, i.e. a care sheet, to the purchaser at time of sale
most the shops near me either don't have them or say that they haven't got around to photocopying anymore after running out!!?! RUBBISH they should have more than enough care sheets to cover all species in there store!!! [/i] _________________ myspace.com/herps_and_stuff |

I think there needs to be further detail regarding the shipment of live reptiles through the courier systems.
Far from being draconian i think you have been too gentle with what you have suggested so far.
While i appreciate you have to tread a fine line between what is best and what will be accepted by the trade and hobbiests alike i do think it should go further so we can draw a line now for the ever increasing amount of people selling online.
If it hasn't already been submitted i think there is much work that could be done on the list you have posted here.
On the note of caresheets, without getting silly, these should already be out there as an industry standard - how many years now have the FBH been working on these?
We do need to impose our own regulations, i fully agree. However, why would anyone want to listen to a group of people who can't even organise a selection of caresheets?
I have no intention of going down the same old road of pointing out problems, i think i have done that to death by now. I just want to see something positive for once. _________________ TFA

I presented the document back at the annual Partnership for Action Against Wildlife Conference back in March of this year, since then government have decided to make this a formal UK proposal for next years CITES Cop in the Netherlands. It is also being looked at as the code of practice to be adopted for the Animal Welfare Act which will com into effect in April next year.
There is, however, still a lot of work to be done. As a Code of Practice for internet sales it cannot be to detailed, in terms of transport it cannot be prescriptive other then to inform you of the regulations. It is for a Code of Practice for Transport Regulations to be prescriptive on the whys and wherefores of courier transportation.
As for care sheets, the FBH has done a lot of work on this issue. However, until DEFRA give guidance on what is required to be contained within them for the Animal Welfare Act little more can be done on this issue. I anticipate this issue will start to move forward in the very near future. |
