He is a member of this forum, and has to my mind, the best looked after Green Iguana that I know of in this country.

I myself have only ever had one Iguana, and that was a "rescue" free to good home individual with plenty of associated problems . I kept her more or less free range, on a stand much like you would a parrot. I gave her as much space as possible, but still was not happy with the situation in all honesty. I would never buy one, and share your concerns about the availability of them still Rick. In the vast majority of cases, the animal is not given the proper conditions and/or space and/or diet.
Nile monitors are another example. There is a young one for sale now in my areas local "herp shop" as well as countless green Iguanas. As Hog boy said earlier else where, this is the sort of thing that gives the hobby a bad press. Gross irresponsability by the people who have in theory the most to lose. The traders.

It really p****s me off to be honest. Much better to have a carved one like Cass, unless one can provide a set up like the one above that is.

ive just been looking through the classifieds and a add with the title CHEAP REPTILES caught my eye, I visited this business web site, who I wont name and they specialise in large imported monitor species

if someone is looking for a cheap reptile are they going to be willing to spend hundreds of pounds providing it with the proper environment, or are they gonna think well this is a cheap reptile im not spending the required £££ on its up keep?

its disgusting how the target market for large species is the public who dont know any better or understand what they are getting into when they buy a cute nile monitor hatchling for peanuts

That is exactly what happens. I see it happening in a shop which I also won`t mention the name of. The complete "starter pack" is sold to the trusting and naieve customer. This is nearly always "bare minimum" standard, and will have been outgrown within 6 months. I have far more respect for those businesses that refuse to sell both Nile monitors and Iguanas, because let`s face it, how many people can really provide for their needs? Not many me thinks.

In some ways this all goes back to my post a while a back is it a good thing if certain herps are sold dirt cheap? pros and cons at the end of the day. But the iggies in my local rep shop for 44.99 in my view are cheap for such a rep.

None of my herps have worked out cheap, not after the food bills, the correct set ups which always cost more in most cases than the rep etc.

Don't get me wrong I do not object to anyone keeping anything if and only if, it is done in the correct manner. But selling such herps as iggies without the correct advice and at cheap prices is wrong in my view.

what if a pricing policy was introduced to the shops ect, would this improve things in theory? maybe shops were forced by the ihs or fbh to charge a higher price for less suitable animals or if they were made to donate a percentage of the sale price to a reptile rehoming charity

just a thought doubt it will ever happen though
