It is advised that you remove the pair and return them to their separate tanks.

I looked up the hibernation for the Herman and it is not required unless breeding is planned. Both the male and the female is adviced to hibernate before breeding for higher successful rate.
While researching this I read something interesting. The eggs are fertilized before the shell is formed so mating is not require each time. The females can store sperm for up to 4 years Shocked (Yes you heard right) So even is no male is around in the meantime, a female might still lay fertilized eggs after one to three years. Shocked

Can you image if we could do that? That would be scary. You break up with a boyfriend and three years later announce that he's going to be a daddy. That would make a crazy world. Oh and if we decided to make some loving, we would have to be on a birth control method for 4 years just in case. Shocked

Have anyone heard of this?

Keep em both Linda. I had a huge group once. Great fun

What size are they both now?

I am sure you could sort out a bachelor pad for him to use as necessary. Get a couple more females over time if you like too. If you have the room to it will certainly take the heat off the one. Wink Very Happy

Peter,
You have a lot of knowledge and experience with reptiles so
is there any one book about turtles that you would highly recommend? I've been reading a lot and they all seem to contradict themselves.

Chantal contact the Tortoise trust on the net. A C Highfield has published a fair amount of literature and videos etc. I am no expert.

Linda, how big are your hands? Laughing
